Development of a research strategy for rail transport

Research strategy for rail transport

Funded by: German Center for Rail Transport Research (DZSF)

Coordinator: Fraunhofer Institute for Technological Trend Analysis INT

Goal: In February 2024, Fraunhofer INT launched the research project with the aim of supporting the German Center for Rail Transport Research (DZSF) in the development, documentation and communication of a medium-term research strategy. The aim of the project is to identify the needs of all relevant players in rail transport in order to tackle the challenges of the coming years in a targeted manner.

As part of a Delphi study, the project involved experts from various stakeholder groups, including experts from science and technology, rail transport companies, rail infrastructure companies, representatives from politics and public authorities and various social associations. In a multi-stage process of interviews and surveys, over 100 future-oriented research topics from a wide range of subject areas, ranging from new technologies and innovations, traffic management and operations, sustainability, to various political, economic and social aspects, have already been identified and validated as part of a large-scale survey with over 800 participants.

The results of the project to date were presented at the 8th Rail Research Workshop on November 14, 2024 in Berlin.

Project launch: February 1, 2024

Project end: March 31, 2025
